How to Choose an Accountant

     1. Remember that you have a choice. You don’t need to pick the first accountant that you have an appointment with. Shop around.

     2. Choose someone that you can communicate with.  Sure, a first meeting is going to be awkward, but you can tell whether they are listening to you or not.  Do they ask you questions that make sense? Do they act condescending?

     3. Ask how aggressive they are about tax planning.  Pick someone who fits your style, rather than trying to get your accountant to do things they are uncomfortable with.

 4. Try to get a sense of whether they have the time for you. Do they or their office staff seem overwhelmed, disorganized or harried?  (Don’t go shopping in April - they all will look that way).

 5. Ask what their specialties are. Do they know your industry?  Are they familiar with your software?

 6. Ask about price.  Choose someone you can afford, but don’t make the choice primarily about price. If you pick well, you will be choosing a great partner who can help you and your business immensely.
