The Lucerne Association for Community Education

LACE was formed in response to the need for an organisational vehicle that could provide a venue open to everyone for whatever needs to be done to continue to make this a great place to live. The current focus on the arts, particularly music and theatre, is reflective of the community's willingness to embrace each other's abilities and skills. The Sacred Music Festival will include talents of local Slocan Valley people, as well as those from a distance. This will be a weekend filled with participation and performance events, along with workshop experience.

The Bosun Opera House

The Bosun Opera House, or "The Bosun" as it is referred to locally, was built by Joe Harris, a Fabian Socialist from England. When his ranch land turned out to contain a fair bit of silver, he built the hall for the use of the people of the village and named it after his close friend. When the hall required more management than he cared for, he sold it to the New Denver Community Club for a nominal sum. For nearly one hundred years, The Bosun has played a vital role, and community events of every variety have taken place there. "Bingo at the Bosun" is proudly proclaimed on coffee mugs in a multitude of homes.

The Community Club handed over the responsibility to the Village of New Denver in the mid-nineties when the floor needed to be replaced and volunteers were getting burned out. After several years without a sizable village hall, Lucerne Association for Community Education (LACE) stepped forward and volunteers came out. The floor has been replaced, there's a new coat of paint, and the Bosun Opera House will once more feel the energy of people coming together in celebration!
