A website can provide even the most modest enterprise with the means to reach an international audience with text, graphics and color photographs. It can give local residents detailed information about a business or organization, and provide potential visitors to the area with an idea of what goods or services are available.

It is possible to store domain names on the slocanlake.com server. This means that, rather than have an address such as [www.slocanlake.com/mysite], you can have your own unique internet address, eg. [www.mysite.com].

It is not necessary to have internet access, or even to have a computer, in order to maintain a website. Websites can be constructed and maintained by local or area businesses which provide such services. Clients who do have internet access can post information directly onto their website. Check out our list of current clients.

Website Storage rates -  the rates listed below are the same for both website addresses listed under the slocanlake.com domain name, and for unique domain names hosted on the slocanlake.com server.

Small businesses -  website storage of up to 100 megabytes is available at a cost of $80 per year for Slocan District Chamber members, and $100 per year for non-members. The initial set-up fee is $25.
Non-profit organizations -  website storage of up to 100 megabytes is available for free for Slocan District Chamber of Commerce members, or $60 per year for non-members. The initial set-up fee is $20.
Banner ads -  available for local real estate for sale by owner, and for businesses providing accommodation. Storage cost is $15 per year for Slocan District Chamber members, and $30 for non-members. Intial set-up fee is $15 for text only, or $30 with a photo. The set-up fee includes simple layout, construction and posting of the banner ad, using text and photo supplied by the client.

Hosting Details

The slocanlake.com server runs Apache on a Linux operating system (currently Debian 2.2)

Hosted websites have access to their own individual cgi-bin directory, with server support for Perl, PHP, and MySQL. Comprehensive website traffic reports are also available.

We request clients to use email accounts and email aliasing through their ISP (Internet Service Provider) whenever possible, in order that the Chamber of Commerce can continue to offer the lowest possible storage rates for Slocan Lake and Slocan Valley businesses and non-profits. If absolutely necessary, emails can be set-up to either the slocanlake.com domain, or to the clients domain. Our server runs Squirrel Mail, which allows for email to be accessed by webpage from any location in the world.
